Inventions for Piano

Order Book

Forward

Paul Renz was born in New York City on November 7, 1952. He is a jazz guitarist and has studied composition at the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music, graduating from both schools with the highest honors.

While it is true that I composed these inventions out of love for the music, I also had a practical and pedagogical goal in mind. I purposefully imitated aspects of Bach’s inventions but also deviated from predictable figurations and harmonic progressions. I hope these deviations will stimulate piano students and listeners alike, instructing the ear to learn new patterns and experience modern harmony within a tonal style.

Paul F. Renz

Having listened to and read through these pieces, I find them to carry out Mr. Renz’s intent and in the process they reveal the forming of a personal idiom that I hope he continues to explore in future editions. These inventions are eminently worthwhile for intermediate as well as more advanced pianists.
